Does SQL 7 server run well in Win Server 2k3 or do I have to upgra

I currently have one machine running windows 2000 server that I promoted to a
PDC. It also runs SQL 7 server and IIS 5.0. I acquired windows server 20003,
and I want to migrate the win2k pdc to win server 2k3, that I will promote to
a high-end domain controller. I wonder if someone with expertise in this
matter could tell me the steps I should follow to accomplish this with the
least headache. Also, does SQL 7 still run well on win2k3 server or am I
required to upgrade SQL? Prior experience showed me that sometimes web sites
running in IIS 5.0 will not run in IIS 6.0 even after "unlocking" them in IIS
6.0. Do you have any advice here?
Please help, and thank you.

SQL Server 7 is not supported on Windows 2003. So while it might work its
not a good idea to try it. If you do gey any issues you will have trouble
getting help. If you want to use the server you should upgrade to SQL Server
2000.

SQL 7 is not certified to run on Windows Server 2003. Personally, I use
SQL 7 on a Virtual PC running Windows Server 2003. But this is just for
development when a real SQL 7 server is unavailable.

Does SHOWCONTIG always use table S-lock?

I noticed that while running a DBCC SHOWCONTIG - this processed blocked
another process attempting to acquire an IX lock on that table. I saw that
the showcontig had an "S" lock on the table.
Is there any way to influence SQL Server into taking an IS lock on the table
and S locks on the pages?
Thanks in advance
WITH FAST Option may help.

index it will acquire an IS table lock - that's the entire reason for me
adding the option in SQL Server 2000.

Does rolling a cluster create down time?

We have about 40 DB's blackening 40 web sites running on a single
SQL2k/Win2003 an A/P cluster. When I roll the cluster from one node to the
next I'm wondering exactly what sort of outage our clients would see. Since
the entire cluster rolls in under a minute would there just be a delay on
the web sites with data requests in response from the web/ODBC side or would
there be an ODBC failure. Also, with regards to active web sessions, would
clients mid transaction on the web pages need to restart their transaction
or would there be a short wait during the SQL roll and then they could
proceed with the transaction (or would they need to start all over again).
I guess I'm wondering if I need to add the 1 minute of roll time into our
annual downtime calculation if the clients see an application
failure/unavailability.
On the roll all client connections are lost and must be restarted. As for
what exactly happens, well that depends on the application. If the rows are
returned locally or if they are stored on the web server. And at what stage
in the process each client was in.
Bottom line, in most cases they either hit F5 (refresh) or never notice.
Cheers,

|||What the clients see or how it affects their transactions depends solely on
how the client app was written. It must be cluster aware. By that I mean
it must be able to detect a connection failure and reconnect. It must also
be able to resubmit the current transaction as it will be rolled back on the
server side when the cluster comes back up.

|||A cluster host transition is exactly like a SQL server stop-start. All
transactions are rolled forward or back at startup. The server is down
during the transition. The client application will see a connection timeout
or a query timeout or a broken connection. Whether the application traps
that or displays that to the end-user depends on the skill of the programmer
who wrote it.
Short answer, a cluster transition is downtime.

|||During the failover process, any active connections are broken. For Web browser users, a simple refresh of the Web page should create a new database connection. In a more traditional client/server application, or
one that relies heavily on a middle tier, application designers may want to consider checking to see whether the connection exists, and if not, reconnect. Therefore, whatever the user was working on when the server
went down may not be completed, unless the transaction completes before the server goes down or the transaction is handled within the application.

Does MS Access installation is required for running application that uses Access mdb file

Hi,

I am developing an application that uses Access database (mdb file) to store the user data. The user of this application is not interested in the database file (to view in MS Access Environment). Does the user machine requires MS Access installation to run my application or just some couple of dlls (OleDB driver, Access DB Engine,..) should be enough to run my application?

Thanks,

Rao

No, they don't need Access. They will simply need to have MDAC installed, and chances are it will already be there. If not get it here

Does Disk space affect Database performance

We have aroud 12 databases running on a live production server which is
segmented
into 3 physical drives.
The E drive is where data and logs are stored.
We have implemented a back up strategy over the past week. As a result , the
E
drive has shrunk in size.
Its a total of 135 GB but has 125 MB free.
Consequently we have noticed that various VB6 and MS Access applications are
suffering from slow performance.
But..the apps are merely querying data and bringing it back to the client.
My question is the lack of disk space affecting performance?
The lack of disk space will cause performance problems, iirc the MS
recommendation is to not exceed about 80% capacity on a disk/disk set.
Not sure what you mean by backing up causing the disk to shrink in
size? Also not a good idea to have log and data files on the same
physical drive.

does database backup truncate tlog ?

I am running sql server 2000 sp3a on win2k. does complete database backup do
tlog backup and truncate it also ?Jay
No,it does not
This is a great thing in SQL Server that you can have a full backup that
was done let me say at 1 May and at 1 June and doing t-log file backup. In
case of disaster you restore a full backup (at 1 May ) and apply all t-log
file backups till a point of distaster .
If sql server was trunucated a log file during the backup you was not be
able to restore all log files due to breaking chaines of transactions

No when your db is in bulk_logged or full recovery model. In order to
truncate the log, you should backup the transaction log, using "backup log".
The db should be set to use bulk_logged or full recovery model in order to
backup the transaction log.
If your database's recovery model is simple, you can not backup the
transaction log. SQL Server will truncate the transaction log after a
checkpoint.

Does anyone know what this means? Anyone?

AuthzInitializeContextFromSid: Win32 error: 234
get this when trying to send an email subscription or a file-share
subscription. Running the service as a domain account and made the account a
member of the WAA group.I should probably mention that I love the "there is more information in the
log file" message that you can find....you guessed it...in the log file.

so I checked the log file, and it said "there is more information in the log

I eventually got out of this endless loop after about 16 hours of
recursively checking the log file.

does anyone know the answer?

i have two Running Total Fields
Total NWN and Total Keyed
how can i add these two Running Total Fields?
and how can i connect mysql to crystal report?
thanks1) Just add them in a formula
{#Total NWN} + {#Total Keyed}

2) Don't know|||i have two Running Total Fields

how can i add these two Running Total Fields?
At the end of outer group which calculates total of these fields,
add like this: {Total Keyed} + {Total NWN}.
Please try since i didn't test this syntax.

Sorry that I don't know a lot more than this. However, it is interesting
that you are running as 'sa', which I would interpret to mean you are using
Method 2 to try to work around the problem. Method 1 is to use a domain
account that has admin permissions on your server. (Interestingly, both
workarounds are "not recommended" by Microsoft.)
Anyway, have you tried the Method 1 workaround? Did it change things at
all?
You mention that the errors come and go. Do you have any idea of whether

Does anyone have sql2005 EE running on 64 bit Itanium server?

I don't think mine is using all of the memory it could on the server. I've read that the Task Manager does not give you an accurate measure of the memory usage but 130 MB max does not seem right on a 12 GB server. I've set the minimum to 2 GB in SSMS. The account that is running sqlservice has Lock Pages in Memory privileges. I've turned on AWE in SSMS just to be safe. We are experiencing high CPU usage and my theory is that it is caused my unnecessary I/O due to not being able to cache. The serve has Windows 2003 sp1. The SQL2005 Buffer Manager AWE Lookup maps\sec, stolen maps\sec, unmap calls/sec, unmap pages/sec, write maps/sec are all 0.

Any help would be appreciated. Below is the out from DBCC MEMORYSTATUS. This server also has an instance of sql2000 EE on it with max memory set to 5 GB and it seems to be running fine.

What "edition" of 2003 is installed. You need to have Enterprise or Data Center installed for 12gb of RAM. See http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/features/comparefeatures.mspx.

Did you set PAE in the Windows boot.ini? If you right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties", how much memory does it show and does it say "Physical Address Extension" after the RAM?

2005 only allocates memory when needed, instead of 2000 which just grabs it all when the service starts.|||

win 2003 EE sp1.

The server doesn't seem to have a boot.ini file. Does 64 bit itanium servers usually have one?

The my computer reading is 11.9 GB of Ram. It does not say "Physical Address Extendsions"

The sql2000 instance is using 6 GB of ram so AWE should be working but it isn't for sql2005.

We use a lot of table variable in 2005 that are stored in memory if it is available an I think sql is thinking there isn't any and writing them to the tempdb instead.

Thanks for responding to my post

|||I forgot in 64bit you don't set PAE, that is only a 32 bit problem.

In SQL 2005 tempdb usage was completely changed. It now stores a lot of temp data that 2000 had in RAM, in tempdb.

See: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/workingwithtempdb.mspx|||I read that one yesterday. "System" has locked pages in memory rights. Our instance is running under "Local System" so it should be doing this, right.|||I talked to someone at Microsoft and they said to ignore Task Manager reading (nice). You can tell SQL memory usage by using Performance Monitor object SQL Memory Management counters "Target Server Memory" and "Total Server Memory". So, unless you are a DBA and know about this Task Manager misleads you.
