Does Reporting Services support this?

Hi. I'm a newbie to Reporting Services and have a few questions about it,
Does Reporting Services 2005 support export to PDF? How about Word and Excel? Is it possible to group items on a report, and have comments displayed for rows that have them, as a line indented below the main row? Here's an example, My Report
Northeast Region
Smith, Jane 2/15/2006 1211156
Comments: Jane wants to attend the next regional meeting.
Smith, Joe 1/11/2006 1194833

Southeast Region
Thomas, Helen 11/12/2005 9938672

Thank you.

1. Reporting services natively supports export to pdf and excel, not to word

2. Yes you can group items like you have listed above using drill down techniques and a well structured query...

Follow this link and watch the Introduction to Reporting Services 6 part series, you'll learn oogles!

Good Luck!

Thank you, Josh :)

I'm sold on SSRS -- just trying to get the folks in my department on board. They've used a product called Cognos, and their users hate -- plus it costs a bundle of money to buy and maintain. Our server support folks have it ready for our testing, just need to convince the folks here this is a solid, robust solution for reporting. Thanks again.

Does reporting service support Chinese?

My report has some chinese. It can be display by IE, but when I export it
as PDF, the chinese words are displayed by "'?" in PDF file.
I don't know how to handle it.I have the same problem.
The Chinese characters show very well in HTML. However, when I export it to
PDF, all of these Chinese characters show as question mark -- ? even I use
Chinese version of Acrobat Reader.
Is it a reporting service bug?

But I am very sad that when I upgrade to SP1, PDF is OK and E-mail in worng
code(GB2312, it should be UTF-8)

Arial, does not support Chinese characters.

Documentation of the Tables in SQL Server

Hi all
I have 15 tables in my database and I want to create a pdf file with description about all the columns of these tables(Data Model)
Few questions
How can I get all the column names in the excel or pdf file?
Is there any tool which can give me the output template for these columns and then I just have to fill the description for each column?
ThanksYou can query the Information _Schema tables to get a listing of tables and their columns.|||Did you ask your dba?|||Did you ask your dba?

Better yet ... did you buy your dba lunch?|||My preference would be to create a script that will create the tables (complete with constraints, etc) and then comment that script liberally. You can use Visual Studio, SQL Enterprise Mangler, or SQL-DMO to make the script if you don't already have one.

Once you've done this, check the fully commented script into source code control too!

-PatP|||Thanks guys for the responses
Here I am talking about an already built system and I am trying to document the database|||You can look on Red Gate i think they have a tool for that|||You can look on Red Gate i think they have a tool for that

so do I, and it's better than redgate's. see the link in my sig. :)|||Thanks
I wish there was any free/open source solution!|||Pat's solution (post #5) is free. I have a binder on my desk that's full of well commented "script" files of all my table definitions. Columns, indexes, triggers, etc. Every time I change a table, I regenerate the script and put new comments in. The extra 5 minutes is worth the effort.|||I don't consider a pile of commented source files as documentation. Would the the source code to SQL Server (heavily commented) tell you how to use it? Not really.

There are some free ones out there (but you get what you pay for). for example:

Document Map for Excel

I've created a document map which displays a text string as the bookmark label (Document map label) when exporting to PDF (e.g. "January 2004", "March 2004"). However, when exporting to Excel, the tabs are named "Sheet1", "Sheet2", etc.

Is it possible to configure a report such that the tab names when exported to excel match the labels used in PDF?Excel worksheets (tabs) are a completely different concept than PDF bookmarks.
Excel worksheets are created based on the pages in the report. Support for providing specific names for Excel worksheets (i.e. report sections) is under consideration for a future release.

Document Management Systems

I have a client that would like to archive all of the documents .word, .xls, .pdf, .jpg, email coorespondance, etc. into some sort of database so in the near future when the project starts up again all of the information is in a clear consise format. I was hoping that this forum could provide some guidance in selecting a software package and a discussion on how to proceed.

I have 6 gigs of documents in a folder on our server.
I was planning on delivering the organized data on a external hard drive after putting the data into some sort of database.
I would like to include metadata about each particular document.
like
who created the document,
Key words about the document's purpose,
time frame the document is revelant for,
and so on.

I would like to use a database structure and possibly hot link the document to the DB.
I would like to use xml (if possible) for the metadata.

any help is greatly appreciated on this
I can be reached at

khively at maximusa dot com

for any additional questionsResponding via email is considered a consulting arrangement by my company. I don't think that's what you had in mind. ;)

Would you like to discuss the idea here in the forum?

-PatP|||Yes I would like to discuss document management software options inside this forum.
Also I might add that I have mimimial database experience. I can run queries in access. That is about it.

thanks in advance

Khively|||Have you considered Microsoft SharePoint? That is a pre-packaged solution that delivers what you've asked for so far.
