Does SQL SERVER MANAGEMENT come with Visual Studio Prof 2005?

I'm following a video tutorial about SQL wherein I'm told to download SQL SERVER MANAGEMENT STUDIO EXPRESS. However I have just bought and installed the whole MS visual studio pro 2005 along with the SQL that comes with it.

I'm afraid to download and install the SQL SERVER MANAGEMENT STUDIO in case it botches up my prg already installed. Can anyone tell me if this management tool is already installed along with the package I have (if so, where is it - not listed in programs)

Thank you for your time.

SQL Server 2005 Developer is included with the Pro VS, this includes the full version of the SQL Server Management Tools. In regards to the tutorial you are using the functions are exactly the same... you actually have more functions in the Developer Version.

|||

Thanks Glenn

Sorry to be so thick but can you tell me how to open the management console? (I'm totally new to VS and SQL and it's not obviously listed on the programs start menu) All there is under SQL Server on the start menu is: SQL Server configuration tools (and none of these mention a server management area).

here is the list of available options under that menu:
'Notifications Services command prompt'
''SQL Server configuration manager' and
''SQL Server error usage and report' and
'SQL Server surface area configuration'

Thanks again for your help

You might have to use the install disks re run the setup amd make sure that the client tools are installed.

Does SQL Server 2005 Workgroup edition support scheduling report?

Hello,

In the feature list of workgroup edition, it says Reporting services is included.

After I finally installed it, the reporting service is there as expected. But what is missing is the subscription tab in the report manager. Then I went to Reporting service Configuration Manager, and I saw emailing setting is there (which indicates scheudling and emailling is supported), then I setup valid sender email address and SMTP server, but the Subscription tab is still missing.

Could anyone (from microsoft) tell me whether emailling and scheduling are supported in Workgroup edition or not?

Thanks a lot!

Details about available RS features per edition can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/sql/technologies/reporting/rsfeatures.mspx

Subscriptions are available for Standard Edition and Enterprise Editions. Data-driven subscriptions are Enterprise Edition only.

Does Sql Server 2005 Installation create a default instance?

Hello everybody!

I have recently installed Sql Server 2005 Enterprise Edition on my PC and I have noticed that it has not installed a default instance. I have tried to do this several times even in some other PC but no default instance is installed.

I can get a default instance if I install Sql Server 2000 but this is not the same I guess. Is there any way to install the default instance via Sql Server 2005?

Do you have already a SQL Server instance installed on the system ?

Are u able to install Named Instance? if not Check the OS. Enterprise Edition need Server Version of OS. Otherwise u can only install client component.

|||Well, as I mentioned before I have installed Sql Server 2005 in several computers but I can explain you some of the cases:
1. In my computer I had already installed Sql Server 2000 and I had created two other instances except the default instance (LOCAL). Then I installed Sql Server 2005.
As a matter of fact I want to make a web synchronization for a merge replication. But I can not configure the merge replication for web synchronization because the database and its instance seems to be in SQL server 2000. That's why I want an 2005 sql server instance.

2. I have also uninstalled Sql Server 2000 and all of its instances from my computer, and I have reinstalled Sql Server 2005. But no default instance was created.

3. I have also installes Sql Server 2005 in another PC which had no instace installed, but the results were the same.

What should I do?

|||Do you mean I can not create any instance if my OS is Windows XP?

Yes if you are installing Enterprise Edition it will not install Services on Windows XP. You can install Standard or any other Edition

Does Sql Server 2005 Enterprise Edition Support Managed Code ?

Dear friends,

please help,

let me tell you what happens,

1) first i installed Sql Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, everything was working fine except i was not able to create managed objects from BI, like stored procedures, triggers, UDT, etc etc.

2) so i installed VS.net 2005 complete + Sql Server 2005 Express Edition

now i was able to create stored procedures, triggers, etc etc, i'm talking about the CLR objects, ok, i.e. the managed code, but........ i was only able to do this from Sql Server 2005 Express Edition.

whenever i try to create managed objects CLR like stored procedures and stuff from the Sql Server 2005 Enterprise edition it gives me the following error :

"The Sql Server supplied by these connection properties, does not support managed code, please choose a different server"

please help meeeee.. please please, tell me what's the problem ?

below i'm attaching a screenshot of the error....

first off, I ASSURE you SQL Server 2005 EE supports SQLCLR. http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/features/compare-features.mspx

secondly, sql server 2005 has CLR Integration turned off by default and if you were to attempt using a sql 2005 EE default install/instance you could still deploy the sqlclr routines, its just that upon attempting to use them you would receive the error "Execution of user code in the .NET Framework is disabled. Enable "clr enabled" configuration option."

I can only reason that you are in fact NOT connecting to a SQL Server 2005 instance from a Visual Studio 2005 database project.

yes even i think i was using, sql server 2000 your right.

thanks for your kind help,

Does SQL Express support upgrade from MSDE2000 Chinese Edition?

I've tried to download the sql express and install, but it doesn't allow me to select upgrade the default instance (which i've installed msde2000 chinese edtion), it told me due to the language problem, sql express can't upgrade the default instance and only could install sql express in new instance.

I have no idea for the language edition for sql express since the download page doesn't have a language selection.

So does anyone know that,
1. would sql express have multi language edtion ?
2. if sql express would have one language edtion, how could install it to upgrade from one existing msde2000 simplified chinese edtion ?Upgrading across languages is not supported. If you want to upgrade your Chinese databases you'll need to wait until the Chinese edition of Express is released. The currently released version of Express is English only.

We have many development installs. If the SP changes are significant only
to the server then installing it there only would be much more effective for
us.

did need to upgrade development but I guess it is optional):

What were the specific fixes to the Designer? We've seen some intermittent

relate to that general area, that might further influence our decision.

Does Service Pack 2 affect Client Tools?

Hello,

Does Service Pack 2 affect client tools? In other words, if you have a client machine with just the tools installed (management studio, BIDS, etc) do I need to run the SP2 package on this client as well?

Regards, Jeroen

YES. Always update ALL clients to the same SP as the servers.

Does not allow remote connections

I have installed SQL Server 2005 Std on an XP system for development using VS 2005. When I try to
connect to the DB via Server Management Studio, I get the message that "... does not allow remote
connections".
When I launch Surface Area Configuration and select the Surface Area Configuration for Services and
Connections, I see only 4 services listed: Analysis, Reporting, Integration and SQL Server Browser.
There is no Database Engine Service listed!
Have I installed incorrectly?
TIA LarsHello,
Please check if the following folder exist:
%programfiles%\Microsoft sql server\mssql.1\mssql\data
If it does not exist, it seems the database engine is not installed, you
may want to go to Add/Remove program to install this component.

Does not allow remote connections

I have installed SQL Server 2005 Std on an XP system for development using V
S 2005. When I try to
connect to the DB via Server Management Studio, I get the message that "...
does not allow remote
connections".
When I launch Surface Area Configuration and select the Surface Area Configu
ration for Services and
Connections, I see only 4 services listed: Analysis, Reporting, Integration
and SQL Server Browser.

Does IIS need to be installed on the SQL Server machine?

If I have Reporting Service installed on one server and the ReportServer
database on another server, do I need IIS installed on the server that houses
the ReportServer database? I'd rather not have IIS and SQL Server on the
same machine. No you do not. IIS has to be only on the server that has RS installed. RS is
an asp.net application.

Does Graphics Card affect preformance of rendering?

I have a feeling that this is an urban legend, but I'd to verify:

Will the graphics card installed in the RS machine affect performance of any of the rendering laternatives? If so, significantlly?

An RS machine is typically a server, and such tend to have low-end graphics cards.

Two of my customers insists that they have "heard this somewhere"...

RS uses GDI internally for some rendering operations. In theory, a video driver can hook GDI and perform some of the operations more efficiently. In practice, I don't think we have seen anyone report any performance boost because of this though.

Does Force Protocol Encryption on Server Require Certificate to be Installed on Client?

So I was able to enable the option to Force Protocol Encryption using
SQL. However, I was still able to connect to this instance of SQL
using the Query Analyzer tool from a machine without the certificate
(public key) installed.
This leads me to believe that the client connected to the server w/out
encrypting communications or that the client doesnt require a
certificate in order to connect (encrypted) to the instance of SQL now
configured to force protocol encryption. As a result, I have the
following question.
Once protocol encryption is enabled on the server using the SQL Server
Network Utility, must the certificate (public key) be installed on the
client in order to access SQL on the server (now configured to force
protocol encryption)?
What does it mean when I connect to the instance of SQL from a machine
w/out the certificate? How is this working? Are communications still
encrypted from client to server?
Thanks in advance for any help/direction.
If found a good article.

Thanks in advance for any help/direction.If you have a certificate on the Server and Force Protocol Encryption
turned on then the traffic is encrypted to and from all clients. The client
does not need a certificate.

The client only requires that the Trusted Root is updated if you enable
protocol encryption from the client.
If it is enabled via Server Network Utility, then the client doesn't need
to Trust the same Root Authority.
Essentially, all you need is a valid certificate on the server.
